No more babies for me, I have a plan b

This post is sponsored by Plan B One-Step and SheKnows Media.

I had my last baby a little over a year ago. Last, as in final, in addition to most recent. I prayed for this baby. I kept track of my ovulation, and even started eating foods that promised to improve my fertility. We planned for this baby. We wanted this baby. But now we’re done.

Our family feels complete with little Jamie in the picture. He’s the punctuation to the end of our sentence. It’s definitely bittersweet, because there were many things I loved about being pregnant and bringing a baby into the world.

Then, of course, there’s the indescribable feeling of having a newborn and all of the amazingness that comes with that. Knowing that I won’t experience either of those things again is sometimes hard to think about.

It’s a choice that works for our family, though. My husband, Terrence, and I agreed that physically, emotionally, and—keeping it real, financially, two children is it for us. The most important thing is, I just don’t think I can take another pregnancy.

For as many reasons as I enjoyed being pregnant, there were double the complications and challenges. The pregnancy itself was rough and filled with issues, but I’ve also had two c-sections. This last one took me really long to recover from, and I can’t do it again.

We’re happy and content, and know that we’re blessed to have the children that we do have. But, we’re not planning to have any more kids.

Even the best of us need a “plan b” sometimes

That’s not to say that we don’t plan to keep practicing making a baby! Have you seen how good my husband looks? Seriously, sex is important part of marriage, and it’s not just about procreating.

Right now, we’re using a birth control method that seems to be working for us. We’re very careful, but understand that no method aside from abstinence is fool-proof.  And we’re not even going to go there. Again, have you seen my husband?

As cautious as we are, Terrence and I are human. Birth control can fail. We miscalculate or time things the wrong way. Anything can happen. That’s why I’m not ashamed to admit that, if I needed a back up plan, I’d definitely use it.

Yes, I’m married. Sure, we would make it work if we had another baby. None of that matters. Emergency contraception is not just for a certain “type” of woman. It’s a way for all women to be take control of our fertility.

prevent pregnancy before it begins

Plan B One-Step is a back-up plan for helping to prevent a pregnancy before it starts. It’s not like your routine contraception that you take every day, but a back-up that you should take within 72 hours of unprotected sex or birth control failure.

I love that Plan B One-Step is an over-the-counter emergency contraception that is readily accessible. It can be found in the family planning or sexual health sections at all major retailers, including CVS Health, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Walmart and Target.

You don’t need a prescription, or ID to purchase it, and there’s no age restriction.

If you can’t find it in the aisle, you can ask the pharmacist, and you don’t need an ID for that either.

One of the common misconceptions about Plan B that makes a lot of women not want to use it is that it’s like an abortion pill. It isn’t. Plan B One-Step helps prevent a pregnancy from occurring. If I were to use Plan B and was already pregnant, it wouldn’t affect my pregnancy at all.

That’s when Terrence and I would have to pull out the “plan C”—make it work.

If you find that you need to use emergency contraception, just do it. You don’t have to be ashamed or embarrassed to pick up Plan B One-Step at the store. Just like my husband and I sat down and discussed family planning, consider doing that with your partner.

Hi, I am confused for one thing. I have a four years old child. Now my husband told me for another baby. But I am not interested in being pregnant again. What should I do right now? What do you suggest about this? Thanks in advance for giving me the clarification.
