I’m super excited to be partnering with Gold Emblem Abound at CVS/pharmacy as one of the #CVSTrailMakers this year!
When’s the last time you went outside just to play? I’m not talking about a scheduled playdate. I mean you and your little one spending quality time together and having fun outdoors with no agenda? As the days get longer and the sun gets brighter, Ayva and I have been getting outdoors a lot more to soak up some Vitamin D and breathe in the amazing fresh air. It’s been really windy lately, but we don’t let that stop us. We throw on a jacket, grab us a few blankets, and go on about our merry little way. It takes more than a little bit of wind to stop the Riley girls from doing our thing!
Because I’m not the type of mom that does a lot of planning, our outings are usually spontaneous adventures. We never know from one day to the next where we’re going to end up, and I love that Ayva is always down for whatever. The other day I decided I wanted to hang out at the lake after I picked Ayva up from school. Of course, I decided that about 1/2 hour before it was time to pick her up. Since I had something scheduled for the evening, I knew we only had a couple of hours to play. I was already out and didn’t want to waste our precious together time by going all the way home for snacks and a game. I pulled into the CVS/pharmacy parking lot, ran inside to get a bunch of our favorite Gold Emblem Abound snacks and a horseshoe game, and 10 minutes later I was on my way to pick up my little buddy for some fun in the sun.
Spending quality time with your little one doesn’t have to be stressful. Kids are notoriously easy to please. All they really want is attention and to know that you’re there for them. I know how it gets sometimes, though. You have work to do, the house needs to be cleaned, and trying to find the mind space to even think of an activity can be difficult. Well, you know I wouldn’t leave you hanging! I’ve got a few ideas to help you stop planning and start playing with your kids:
Go old school.
The internet has a lot of us thinking that we have to go way overboard in order to have fun with our kids. That is so not true. The games that we used to play when we were kids are just as good now as they were then. I found a game of horseshoes in CVS/pharmacy in the seasonal section for $3.99, and we played with it for over an hour that afternoon. Ayva has already said she can’t wait to take the game to the beach. Keep it simple. Keep it old school.
As long as you have great snacks, you’re good.
If you can’t think of anything to do, just get a bunch of yummy snacks and find a park to sit in to eat them. The change of scenery, being outside and being together will probably spark your imagination and give you some ideas of things to do when snack time is over. The Gold Emblem Abound line at CVS/pharmacy is not only made with quality ingredients that are good for you, but they’re convenient as well. There are individually packaged granola and fruit bars in different flavors, savory snacks like my favorite Lime Flavor & Black Pepper Baked Rice Thins, and even unsweetened organic juices in a resealable container. I had a CVS ExtraCare 20% off coupon, so I spent about $15 on snacks that’ll last us through at least 6 spontaneous adventures!
Just say yes.
If your child has an idea of something that they’d like to do, every once in awhile, just say yes. Don’t worry about clothes getting dirty, or how close it is to dinner. Just go with the flow. Show your child that their ideas matter and that you take their suggestions seriously. Giving them the chance to be in charge with your playing will be a huge confidence boost, and is a safe way for them to practice their leadership skills!
If you aren’t giving your child your full attention when y’all are hanging out together, it doesn’t matter how fun the activity is that you’re doing, they’re not going to like it. Put away your phone, and don’t worry about taking pictures to post to Instagram. Be present and be attentive. You guys could be sitting in a chair, eating a Gold Emblem Abound Chocolate Chunk & Chia bar and watching paint dry, and your child would love it because they’re doing it with you.
