You know what I recently realized? I’ve never met a person who doesn’t like sandwiches. Sure, I’ve run into folks who don’t do carbs or gluten so they can’t eat them, but to not eat a sandwich because they don’t like them? Never met ’em. In fact, I’d be surprised if that person even exists. Come on, what’s not to love about sandwiches? Two pieces of bread filled with whatever your heart desires? Well now, that’s just awesome. That’s why sandwiches are perfect for folks who are particular about food. It just so happens that I birthed a picky eater. Trust me when I say that I’m very grateful to the person who created the sandwich otherwise there are times that I’d have a very hungry kindergartener on my hands.
Not every sandwich is created equal, though. There are the type of sandwiches that my husband likes, nice and thick with good bread and stuffed with meat and cheese. I like flat sandwiches. A little bit of turkey. A slice of cheese. A piece of lettuce or a bunch of arugula. I’m a simple girl. Ayva’s sandwich preference falls in between. Because she’s picky at times, I’ve come up with a pretty foolproof method to make sure she’s always satisfied. Since sandwich season is here, I figured I should share my method with you.
Make little sandwiches.
Kids love miniature food. Either use little rolls or cut bread into small squares. I’m not suggesting you go on Pinterest and get all bento on your sandwich (unless you want to). Just the fact that the sandwiches are little will make them desirable to most little kids.
Fill the sandwich with good stuff.
I have found that children often don’t like certain foods because it’s just not good. Make sure you buy good deli meat, and well made cheese. Don’t just throw any old thing between a couple of slices of bread and expect that your kid will be happy. They have sensitive palates that’s worth paying attention to. Sometimes. Ha!
Add some fun to your sandwich.
