The one thing that scares about my daughter growing up is thinking about her becoming a teenager and us having that talk. The talk about sex. Obviously teenagers are doing it. MTV has a popular show called “Teen Mom” about real teenagers who are real parents. So when I think about my daughter growing up, I wonder if talking about abstinence will be enough. In my latest iVillage iVoices report, I get advice from moms who have been there/done that.
I think even more important than teaching your child about birth control, is instilling in them a sense of self-worth so that they know they are worth waiting for. They are worth waiting until they are in a loving, committed relationship with someone who cares about them before they have sex. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect society, so we need to educate our children about birth control as well. Because if we don’t…who will?
