I absolutely love having natural hair. Really, though, what’s not to love? When you walk into a room with an afro illuminating your face like a spotlight, it’s basically like you’re a celebrity. A natural hair celebrity. Folks want to touch it, and they’re totally intrigued with how fluffy and big it is. Having a fly afro is an ego booster, for sure. When I was younger, I would try all types of styles on my hair. From two-strand twists to bantu knots and every updo, protective style and roller set in between, I had the time and energy to experiment, and it was fun!
Now that I’m older, working all the time, and managing a household with a husband and child, doing hair (unless it’s my daughter’s) is at the bottom of my to-do list. Over the last few months, my go-to hair style has been to use an elastic band to pull my hair back into a puff. It’s doing so much damage to my edges, though. Also, now that I’m in my mid-thirties, I want something a little more sexy and sophisticated. I’ve been hesitant to use heat on my hair, but after doing some research, I realized that a little heat is okay. As long as I’m protecting my hair with products that nourish and protect it, I’ll be fine.
As I set off on my adventure of doing something different to this hair, I knew I needed to find products to make the task easier. I have mixed textured hair, so I was very interested in trying out Beautiful Textures from Strength Of Nature. Beautiful Textures is enriched with Aloe Vera, Coconut Olive, Soy, Argan oil, Shea and Mango butter, all of which are right up my alley! One part of my hair is crinkly, the other is straight, and don’t even get me started on these crazy grays! They’re just wiry and wild and do whatever they want. The Beautiful Textures line was made for hair like mine. Curly, Wavy, Kinky-Coily and Frizzy, Beautiful Textures can make it all manageable.
I started with the Rapid Repair Deep Conditioner to prepare my hair for styling. I loved how thick and creamy the conditioner was, and I was able to comb through my hair much easier than usual. I couldn’t believe it! I usually struggle with combing (and honestly, often skip it altogether) but the Rapid Repair Deep Conditioner truly made a difference. After that, I used the Moisture Butter Whipped Curl Crème before blow drying. It was a light treatment that didn’t flake at all, even when I added heat to my hair. After I flat-ironed my hair, I even used a bit to smooth down my edges.
As fly as I feel when I’m having a good afro day, it was nice to be able to switch it up! The best part about it was Terrence and Ayva’s reaction when I walked out to show them my new ‘do. You gotta keep folks on their toes! Don’t let them get to comfortable with your look! Ha! Really, though, I’m excited to be able to go straight for awhile. My hair is so soft thanks to Beautiful Textures, and I’m looking forward to a break from my normal natural hair routine.
