Ayva and I spend a lot of time in the car together. It doesn’t matter what the destination is, my little roadie is always ready to roll. From Saturday morning bagel runs and shopping, to school, ballet practice, or church, she and I are like the Mommy & Me version of Thelma & Louise. It’s fun riding with Ayva. She often notices things that I overlook, pointing out cool murals, or clouds that look like animals as we roll along. Since we don’t do screens in the car, there are no tablets, or built in televisions to distract her. She doesn’t have her head down, tapping away at games on my cell phone. Instead, the window provides her entertainment, the “channel” changing with every new street we drive down.
Now that Ayva is in kindergarten, our car rides are even more interesting. I get to hear all about the new things she’s learning, and she sings songs that her teacher taught her. She doesn’t even ask me to “turn on some jams” anymore, because she has so much to tell me and music would just interfere. I love that she talks from the minute I click the straps on her car seat when we leave her school, all the way until we unlock them when we reach home. There has been a time or two in the last couple of weeks when I’ve had to glance in the rearview mirror at a stoplight because I couldn’t believe this animated little girl chatting away in the back seat is the same baby who would scream at the top of her lungs when she was in the rear facing seat if I didn’t sit in the back with her. Times have definitely changed.
I know as Ayva continues to get older, things will keep changing. Eventually, she’ll be in the back seat with friends whispering school girl secrets to each other, or singing pop songs like there’s no tomorrow. There’s one thing that I hope never changes, though. As the years go on, no matter what kind of car I’m driving, or where we’re going, I want our car rides to continue to be as special as they are now.
