We Were Filmed for 2 Weeks: The #NoMoreFORO Experiment with @ReadyRefresh

I’ve been keeping a secret. My family was filmed for 2 weeks as part of a FORO experiment with ReadyRefresh℠ by Nestlé ®. Many thanks to them for sponsoring this post and keeping the Riley Family hydrated!

Have you ever heard of FORO? No, not FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), FORO. It’s the Fear of Running Out. Don’t worry, I didn’t know what it was, either, until my friends at ReadyRefresh by Nestle® told me about it. Even if you haven’t heard of it, there’s a good chance that you’ve experienced it. I was shocked to realize that yes, I did experience the Fear of Running Out! You know how you start running low on everyday essentials like toothpaste, toilet paper, or bread and you start stressing out because who has time to go to the supermarket in between choir rehearsal, Girl Scouts, church, and work? Come on, y’all. I know I’m not alone!

Fortunately, ReadyRefresh by Nestlé® came to the rescue and introduced me to their customized bottled water delivery service. I can stay hydrated without stepping foot inside of a store. Buying individual bottles gets costly, so I find myself having to go to the grocery store every few days to restock on cases of my favorite Arrowhead Sparkling Water.  I guess I could go to a big box store and buy in bulk, but bringing those cases up to our second floor apartment is such a hassle, not to mention the crowds at those places!

About ReadyRefresh by Nestlé®

We really haven’t had a choice, though. Water is the primary drink of choice for Ayva and me, and it’s a close second for Terrence. Our family recognizes the importance of drinking water over other beverages because those non-water choices account for 47% of added sugars in the US American diet and more than 13% of calories consumed per day. The newly released 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that the primary beverage consumed should be either calorie-free (like water), or contribute beneficial nutrients like low fat milk or 100% juice.

We all need water, and ReadyRefresh makes it easier for us to get it. They provide a variety of leading bottled water brands like Arrowhead, Nestlé Pure Life, Perrier, and San Pellegrino right to your home, on a schedule that you determine. The best part of it all is that it only takes a few clicks through ReadyRefresh.com to set things up.

Our FORO Experiment

A few weeks ago, my family was invited to participate in an experiment to determine whether FORO was real. We installed cameras throughout our apartment that observed our water consumption and social habits for two whole weeks. Every night I tracked how much water Terrence, Ayva, and I drank, as well as our daily behaviors and emotions. For the first week, we had an abundance of water thanks to a delivery from ReadyRefresh. At the beginning of the second week, the bulk of the water was taken away, and we were left with just enough to get by.

Before we started, we learned:

  • 69% of Americans surveyed experience feelings such as stress, anxiety, and worry when household items start to run low
  • Nearly half of full-time working parents (46%) surveyed say they ration or replace everyday household items with a less desirable alternative at least once per week , in order to avoid running out completely.

We were interested to see if those things would ring true for our family. Here’s what we discovered by the end of the experiment:

  • Between Week 1 and Week 2, water decreased from 84% of total beverage intake to 52% of total beverage intake
  • Water intake decreased by 54% and Brandi experienced a 46% decrease, Terrence decreased by 63%, and Ayva decreased by 50%.
  • Terrence more than doubled soda intake between week 1 and week 2 (150% increase), increased his coffee/tea intake by 63%, and alcoholic beverage consumption by 80%.

How cool is this! Not having to worry about running out of water because we had plenty and we knew more was coming without any effort on our part, actually helped us to increase our water intake dramatically! #NoMoreFORO, indeed.

Oh, I had no idea there were so many different kinds of water. I need to look into this, I don’t drink any water at all anymore.

I never heard of FORO. This is so me if I have one roll of Charmin left or one roll of paper towel. In terms of water intake, I do mot but soda except ginger ale if someone is not feeling well. Our only sugary beverage splurge is lemonade. However, I do find my youngest wastes a lot of water bottles because they are accessible and she forgets how many are open.

But what about the environmental impacts of all those plastic bottles?

I really love this idea. I imagine our water use would improve too if access to it was easier.

Mrs. Riley! I’ve always loved your blog… & I am so happy for you that your family is your business! I just saw your daughter (and although it’s cropped, you behind her?!) on the homepage for ThredUP’s website, on the children’s clothes link! Congratulations on EVERYTHING! Blessings!
