You know how a new show comes out and there’s all sorts of hype around it but when you watch it, you’re totally disappointed? That seems to happen a lot, especially with shows for children. Project Mc2, the new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) focused original mini-series on Netflix delivers everything it promises, though. Really smart girls, clever dialogue, and a tagline that had my 6-year-old saying, “smart is the new cool” have totally won over my mama heart!
I recently read that while 74% of middle school girls indicate that they’re interested in STEM. only .04% actually pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and math fields. There are a lot of factors that go into their decision not to go into those fields, and one major reason is lack of representation. Project Mc2 is working to change the perception of what it’s like to be a woman working in a STEM field. They’re starting by planting seeds of interest in adolescent and pre-teen girls with a colorful, fun and lively series.
Project Mc2 features four girls who are talented in different areas of STEM. McKeyla McAlister (Mc2) is an operative for a secret organization that solves crimes. She has insane critical thinking skills, and is the daughter of one of the most powerful women in the world. McKeyla reluctantly teams up with new friends, Adrienne, Bryden and Camryn after realizing she needs their technical expertise to solve a case. The group of girls are the brightest in the school, and end up outsmarting a criminal and saving the day.
Not only was Ayva intrigued by the show, but Terrence and I were as well. I have to admit, we watched all three of the episodes several times because some of the dialogue went over our heads. It’s not often that a show made for children makes them think, so we absolutely appreciated that.
Our friends at Netflix sent Ayva a Top Secret package filled with activities to complete. Watching Project Mc2 is the perfect springboard to other activities to get your girl interested in STEM. Watch Project Mc2 now on Netflix and then try this cool experiment that Ayva received as part of her Top Secret mission!
