Packing Healthy Snacks with Champions for Kids

One of my biggest parenting fears would be that I would be unable to provide for my daughter. I don’t mean the wants, fancy sneakers or big screen televisions, I’m talking about the things that she needs. Things like shelter, warm clothing, healthy food to eat. There are many children whose parents are living my fear, and are having a tough time being able to provide nutritious meals for their family. Here in Philadelphia, Ayva’s daycare is located in an area that has the 4th highest rate of food hardship in the nation. That means, some of Ayva’s friends are only eating healthy when they are at daycare.

This month, I took part in the Champions for Kids Simple Service Project sponsored by Abbott Nutrition, which was to create a nutritious snack pack. I explained to Ayva that we were going to buy good snacks so that none of her friends had to be hungry, and when we went to Walmart, she pointed out food she thought kids would like and said, “That would be a good snack for my friends!” We were able to buy lots of snacks, including things like applesauce and Pediasure, that the teachers could keep in their classroom to supplement any meals for kids who need a few extra nutrients.

When we delivered the Snack Pack to the daycare, the teachers were very grateful because they care so much about the children, and they often purchase items from their own money. Ayva was so happy to be able to help her friends out and has been asking to go shopping for her friends again!

Participating in the Champions for Kids Simple Service Projects has been such a blessing to my family. I love being able to do for others, even as a single mom on a budget, and I love that Ayva is learning how to be be a blessing to others. Follow #AbbottCFK on Twitter, or check out the Champions for Kids website so that you can learn more about the simple service projects for the rest of the year, and to see how you can get involved!
