Growing up, I spent a lot of time in my grandmother’s kitchen. There was a big table with plenty of chairs for all the folks who would drop in to visit her all the time. In that kitchen, at that table, she mixed cakes while chatting with friends, started her mornings with devotion and Bible readings with my grandfather, and created memories for her children and grandchildren that we aren’t likely to forget. That lady was special. That kitchen was magical. While I don’t claim to have the same powers that my grandmother had, I do want to create new kitchen memories with my own little girl. Canning, or preserving fresh foods to eat later, is a time honored tradition that has brought folks together in the kitchen for years. Ayva and I are joining them as we perfect our canning technique with Jarden Home Brands and renowned chef and Bravo’s Top Chef judge, Hugh Acheson, during the first annual International Can-It-Forward Day on Saturday, August 16th!
A day to celebrate home canning, International Can-It-Forward Day allows food enthusiasts to connect via a variety of online and in-person activities. New and experienced canners can participate in a live webcast on www.freshpreserving.com, taking place on ground in Brooklyn Borough Hall Farmers Market, filled with canning demos where viewer questions will be answered in real-time by Chef Acheson and other experts while they learn the most popular (and delicious) home canning recipes. Twenty five farmers markets across the country will also be hosting Can-It-Forward Day celebrations! In addition to the canning demos, there will be segments on crafting, herb gardening and the brand’s new drinkware line. We will also be attempting a Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Mason Jar Mosaic.
I have to tell you, we have a bit of a head start in our canning education thanks to our new FreshTECH Automatic Home Canning System. Instead of standing over the stove waiting and worrying, we just press a button and the preserving starts. The system does everything from preheating our Ball jars to letting us know when the jars are preserved. I love it because Ayva is able to be involved more, rather than having to watch me boiling water in a pot! It’s canning for the 21st century, and I’m totally digging it! We’ll share our first recipe in the upcoming weeks, and many more, I’m sure, as we take advantage of the farmer’s market fare and prepare for the holidays over the next couple of months. Ayva has requested that we preserve apples, and I’m itching to try my hand at some jelly when apple season starts.
