Last week I attended an event sponsored by Vicks to learn more about their new Behind the Ear Thermometer, as well as to get tips on how to stay well during flu season. Dr. Meg Meeker, author of the book “The 10 Habits of Happy Mothers”, was in attendance as well, and spoke to the group of moms about trusting our instincts when it comes to our children, in health, and really, just period.
That point really resonated with me, to trust my instincts. All I want to do is to make sure Ayva is happy and healthy, and it can be tough to know if I’m making the right decisions. Like how I decided not to have her use an inhaler every single day like the doctor suggested. Or today, how I wouldn’t let her get on a school bus with her preschool to go to the movies because I felt like it was going to be too much for her. I go back and forth between decisions like that all of the time, alternating between beating myself up and giving myself a pat on the back for being so smart.
Fortunately, I also left with other tangible tips for keeping Ayva well. One simple tip was to make sure the air in our house isn’t too dry. A humidifier puts moisture in the air and helps everyone breathe better. I like that idea way better than making Ayva puff steroids everyday.
Also, I learned that my method of testing for temperature (hand on forehead…don’t judge), isn’t (surprise, surprise) that accurate! Thankfully, I was able to leave with one of the Behind the Ear Thermometers so that I can get instant, accurate readings…even when Ayva is sleeping.
Overall, it was nice to get some validation that, no, I’m not crazy, and yes, lots of moms doubt ourselves. With our mom instincts, though, and tools to help us prove that we know what we’re talking, we can keep ourselves, and our families, well.
*For each share of the “What will you share this cold and flu season?” video, Vicks will donate a Behind Ear Thermometer to Baby Buggy, a non-profit dedicated to providing U.S. families in need with essential items for their children! It’s easy to help!
