How I'm Learning To Pray For My Husband

Anyone who knows me would say that I have a way with words. From emails to public speaking, my biggest talent is being able to string words together to encourage, inspire, or entertain. When it comes to praying for my husband, though, it’s like the cat has my tongue. All of a sudden, I don’t know what to say. I mean, I know that when it comes to prayer, anything goes. God wants us to come to Him as our authentic selves, no fancy words or frilly sentences necessary. Even still, I get, I don’t know, it’s like I get starstruck. I’m coming to GOD to talk about my HUSBAND. Talk about pressure!

Even with the pressure, I pray for Terrence every single day of my life. I know how important a wife’s prayers are. They might be lacking flourish, my prayers, but they definitely are heartfelt and real. I want to do better, though. Just like with anything in my life, I want to do it to the very best of my ability. I want to show God how much I trust in His power and might when it comes to protecting my husband and our marriage. I don’t want to be a tentative wife sending up weak prayers. My husband needs me sending up prayers like a warrior.

Look, this world is not easy to navigate, and none of us can do it alone. In fact, I know Terrence and I can’t manage our relationship on its on. Left to ourselves, there’s no telling how this marriage would turn out. Shoot, we’re in this for the long haul. We’re going to need some reinforcement! For the last few days, we’ve had it in the form of a simple book, “100 Prayers For Your Marriage: Draw Close To Each Other And Closer To God” by Darlene Schacht.

100 prayers for your marriage

A couple of weeks ago, my friend and church sister Kim from Things I Thought I’d Never shared that she and her husband were going to work through the book together. She invited other people to join with their spouses, and I’m glad I did. In the few days that Terrence and I have been praying these prayers together, I have felt a shift in our relationship. With me working in the evenings for the last few months, we haven’t had a lot of time together where we just sit and be. Although the prayer only takes a few minutes, in that moment, when we’re sitting close and holding hands, I get a feeling of  peace and contentment that reminds me nightly of how much a blessing it is to be in this marriage.

The prayers in the book are simple, but they cover a wide range of issues that I never even really considered praying about. It has definitely been a wake-up call to see how much I was trying to lean on myself and figure certain things out when I should have been praying for them all along. It’s like I had writer’s block, but for prayers. Prayer block. This book, and the ritual of saying the prayer with my husband every night has helped tremendously in removing that block and opening my heart up to God again.

Prayer is such a powerful and necessary tool in having a successful marriage. How do you pray for your husband?
