Getting BlogHer Ready (For Procrastinators)

I’ve been meaning to write this post for awhile, but I’m just now getting around to it. Now that BlogHer is actually really starting tomorrow, and I’m headed there on a train this evening, it seemed like an appropriate time to share a “getting ready” post. Because, of course, writing a blog post when I should be packing to leave in an hour is appropriate.

If you hadn’t already guessed it, I’m a procrastinator. I don’t really mean to be, it’s just that I’m very energy oriented. The atmosphere has to be right, my chi has to be centered, and the stars have to be aligned, before I feel inclined to get certain things done. Seriously, I’m not putting things off, I’m just waiting until the universe gives me the okay to move forward. You know the saying, “You can’t push a square peg into a round hole”? It’s kind of like that. Try to get me to do something before it’s the right time, and it might not turn out as good as if we would have waited.

I wish I were kidding.

Well, with BlogHer starting tomorrow (!!), and me heading out the door in an hour less than an hour, it seems that all is finally well in the Universe, and the energy in the atmosphere is allowing me to get ready. Because I’m leaving in 54 minutes. And, yet, again, I’m still online writing this post. Okay, really, I need to hurry up now. Like, really.

If you’re like me, and you’re particularly crazy sensitive to the Universe’s energy, here are a few tips to help you get ready for BlogHer…in little to no time!

1. Packing

No matter how much of a procrastinator you are, if you are going to BlogHer, you already have some idea of what you’re going to wear. Now it’s just a matter of actually putting it into a bag!  The key to making sure you don’t forget something, especially if you leave things to the last minute, is taking one minute to write out a list. That one minute will save you so much time when you actually start scrambling at the end. Because, you will scramble.

Another thing to keep in mind is not to put anything in your bag until you have laid it all out on your bed so you can see it.  Group outfits, accessories, and undergarments for each day together in one little pile in order to not miss anything. Here’s the good thing, though, if you do happen to leave something, thankfully, BlogHer is in New York this year, so you’ll be able to get it when you get there. Even if you end up purchasing underwear from a 24 hour drugstore, hey, at least you’re wearing them, right?

2. Planning Your Schedule

The BlogHer schedule is crazy! There are tons of sessions to choose from, things like panels and Room of Your Owns…add all of the private events, and even I know that it’s going to be pretty tough to get around if you’re just letting the Universe guide you. If you aren’t leaving until tomorrow, give yourself about an hour to plan things out today. If you’re, like me, leaving in 44 minutes, you can make a plan on the plane or the train.

Besides the BlogHer website, the best resource that I have discovered for laying out your BlogHer schedule is Lanyrd.com.  The way that it’s designed gives an overview of the sessions and events in a simple way that is easy to take in when you have a million other things on your mind that you need to take care of.  If that fails, you can always just go wherever your friends go. No use in everybody planning ahead. Right?

3. Business Cards

Alright, I really need to get upstairs and pack now, so I’m going to make this kind of a hodgepodge of last minute get ready tips. I can’t ignore them, though, especially since I’m getting ready to leave in 37 minutes, and I’m still foolishly waiting for my business cards to arrive before I leave. It would be safe to assume that I’ll be taking some of my own advice from this section!

First, in my defense, my not having new business cards is not my fault.  I ordered them…on Sunday night. But still, I paid for rush delivery, and they were supposed to arrive yesterday!  Anyway, since they didn’t, it’s on to Plan B. Use my old cards. If you didn’t get cards in time, or they didn’t arrive in time, use your old ones.  Seriously, it’s better than not having any, and, unless you’ve changed your name, blog name, or email address, they’ll be fine.  If you don’t have any cards, you can still have some rush printed from a company like moo cards and sent to the hotel, or, go old school and print some up yourself. I promise you, if you meet someone that really likes you, they’re not going to not call you because of your business card.
