“Ever After High: Spring Unsprung” Inspired Barrettes

It wasn’t that long ago that Ayva was infatuated with a little red monster puppet. Well honey, those days are over. This little girl has graduated to loving any character that has a great fashion sense, wild hair, tween angst and grade school drama. Needless to say, she’s completely in love with the girls at Ever After High. I can’t say that I blame her. Ever After High follows the lives of the offspring of some of the most famous fairytale characters that I adored growing up. Watching the show on Netflix with Ayva gives us a different way to connect, and lets me share some of my childhood with her as I participate in hers.

We recently watched over and over again the series special Ever After High: Spring Unsprung.  Now, the school is made up of two groups, the Royal and the Rebels. The kids who want to continue their parents’ legacy are Royals. Those that are interested in carving their own path are Rebels. In the special, Kitty Cheshire’s mother, Cheshire Cat from Alice In Wonderland, puts a spell on the school that makes the Royals act like Rebels and vice versa. The future of the entire school at risk unless things can get back to normal. There’s a lot of action packed in the 48 minute show, and it made me want to go back to the first season and watch the other episodes with Ayva!

Our friends at Netflix were kind enough to send Ayva a couple of Ever After High dolls and some other goodies to inspire us as we had our own Mommy / Daughter movie date. We both really loved the dolls hair. The color is so fun and really shows personality. There’s no way that I’m going to let my kindergartener dye her hair, but I did think of a different way that she could pay homage to her favorite characters with colorful ribbon barrettes.

The barrettes are really easy and fun to make. Moms, I want to encourage you to let your girl do it herself. It’s okay if the ribbons are bunched up a bit or if she wants to mix colors. Let her be creative! Okay, so how did we make them? Well, I purchased a bunch of ribbons that reminded us of the different Ever After High characters, and some plain barrettes. Then we cut ribbon to the size of the barrette and glued it to the barrette. After that, we just tied different color ribbon around the barrette. Incredibly simple but it makes such a big fashion statement!
