Exciting things happen in the 4th quarter, not just professionally but personally as well. Pumpkin patches, trick-or-treating, holiday baking and all of the other super fun family things that autumn and winter bring. Last winter was extraordinarily tough for my family, and we missed out on a lot of the fun. I wanted this year to be different, though.
That’s why I needed to make a change.
Contracting at Facebook for the past 7 months has been fantastic. It’s obviously my most favorite social network, and being on campus with so many brilliant employees was inspiring. Unfortunately, my night time work schedule was starting to wear on my family. I was on the computer ALL THE TIME. Something had to give, and Facebook was it. I just completed my last shift at 1 AM today and turned in my computer and badge this morning. Now, I’m 100% all in at my new position as the Social Media Manager for BlogHer at SheKnows Media.
I Work To Connect
It’s so strange the way life works. I never considered social media as a career when I was in college. Sure, I was on Myspace, but I wasn’t one of those visionaries who saw it as a means to earn a living. Here it is, though, nearly 2 decades later, and your girl has learned new tricks. I don’t know what I’d do for work if Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn didn’t exist. It’d be…weird.
Blogging changed my life. It opened my eyes to all new possibilities, and I’m grateful for the chance to make a living doing the thing that I love doing most, connecting and engaging with people. Having a few months entrenched in the most popular social media site on the planet just served to reinforce that I’m in the right business. We’re not just putzing around on the internet folks. We’re connecting. These connections we’re making with each other online, they’re real.
I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to intentionally create opportunities to connect with even more people in my new role. Also, I work for Elisa Camahort Page, a founder of BlogHer and one of the most brilliant women in media today. To say that I’m ecstatic is an understatement!
What About My Blog?
So, what about my blog? Well, I’m going back to the type of old school posts that made me fall in love with blogging in the first place. I’ll also be spending a lot of time building up my Courage To Earn group and website in order to create more opportunities for the group’s members. For example, I’m working on a grant and micro-loan program for Courageous Earners who need a little help to reach a goal like website design, conference attendance, etc. Courage To Earn is more than just a Facebook group. It’s a community. I’m looking forward to having more time to dedicate to nurturing it.
Finally, I’m going to be PRESENT in my new job. It helps that it actually benefits the community that I love so much! When it’s work time, it’s work time. When it’s blogging time, it’s blogging time. When it’s family time, it’s family time. Down with multi-tasking. I’m going for the one track thing.
When you’re a mom, there are tough decisions to make both personally and professionally all the time. The choice to move on from a job, or accept a new one can be one of the most difficult things in the world to do. When you put family first, though, it’s a lot easier to know what the right thing is to do. I’m excited for this next step in a career that I never could have imagined, and my family is, too.
Have you ever had to make a career choice for the good of your family? I’d love to hear about it!
