Is it just me, or is carrying reusable water bottles to school a modern concept?
I went to school in the late eighties, and early nineties, and don’t recall ever carrying a water bottle.
This actually explains a lot because I was frequently exhausted. Looking back, I realize I was probably dehydrated!
Thankfully, a water bottle is standard for students from preschool on up these days.
When my teenager and her friends get together, they rarely drink anything other than water.
And unlike the lunches my friends and I would pack in middle school, there are few cans of soda or bottles of juice to be found in their lunchboxes.
What should I look for when purchasing water bottles for school?
Just like shopping for a backpack for middle school and other school supplies, you want to find a water bottle with features that best fit your teen’s needs.
For example, if their school doesn’t have water fountains, they might want a larger bottle.
They might prefer plastic over aluminum, or want a particular design.
Here are a few things to keep in mind as you make your selection:
- Is it this a leakproof water bottle?
- What is the water bottle made out of?
- Will this water bottle keep my water cold? .
- How much water does this water bottle hold?
- Is this water bottle durable?
The best water bottle for teenagers
My daughter swears by the Hydroflask water bottle for school. I bought the one she has now at the beginning of the school year in 2020.
Her water bottle has fallen out of the car and rolled down a hill, been dropped more times than we can count, and has been carried to volleyball games, summer camp, and road trips.
Two years later, her Hydroflask is still intact. Sure, there are a few bumps and bruises, but my teen continues to use it every day.
Hydroflask truly is the best water bottle for school.
There are several options of Hydroflask water bottles to choose from depending on the features you want.
I think these are the two best options for middle schoolers:
Hydro Flask Standard Mouth Bottle with Flex Cap
The 21 oz. version of this bottle is what my daughter has, and she loves it.
It’s slim enough to carry every day, but holds enough water to last nearly a full school day.
As I mentioned, this water bottle can take a beating, too, so great for younger teens.

Hydro Flask Wide Mouth Bottle with Flex Cap
Beverages stay cold for 24 hours, and hot for up to 12 hours.
This big 64 oz. wide-mouth bottle can be filled quickly between classes and has enough water to last through the end of afterschool activities.
You’ll have to consider the size and if your teen can hold this bottle and their backpack.
If they can handle it, though, the Hydro Flask Wide Mouth Bottle with Flex Cap is perfect, especially for older students with long days.

Other great water bottle options
Although Hydroflask is our preference, it isn’t the only water bottle to choose from.
One of the best perks of working in tech is getting loads of water bottles as swag.
Our family has tried just about every one of the best water bottle brands.
