When I got my first period, I was presented with one hygiene option: pads.
Now, from the best period underwear for girls to menstrual cups, girls have choices.
That makes me happy because let me tell you, I wish period panties existed when I was a girl. It would have taken away a lot of embarrassment for myself and my peers when our menstrual cycle was on. In addition to being way better for the environment than pads, they’re just so convenient!
With period panties, a girl doesn’t have to worry about carrying around extra pads or tampons, and depending on the brand of period panties, she could go all day without needing to change.
I wish period panties were around when I was young.
My number one goal with my daughter as it pertains to her menstrual health is to make sure she feels comfortable. Whether she’s going swimming or sitting at her desk at school, I don’t want her to deal with leaks.
When I was younger, I hated my period. I’m sure I wasn’t alone. I was so young, and having the responsibility of staying clean and feeling fresh during my period was a challenge. However, I realized early that it didn’t have to be hard. All I had to do was take a lot of showers and change my pads often.
Older relatives would tell my cousins and me that we had it easy. They’d say how we were lucky to not have to wear a sanitary belt. Can you imagine that?
Now our girls can wear underwear and not have to worry about pads or tampons. Oh, and they have period-tracking apps on their phones. Talk about progress!
Why should you get period underwear?
If you’re wondering if you should get your daughter period panties, here are some reasons why you should consider it.
- Period panties are convenient.
You don’t have to worry about carrying pads or tampons with you when you’re wearing period underwear. Your daughter will appreciate being able to do things like go swimming without having to figure out her menstrual situation. - They are good for the environment.
Instead of buying tampons or pads each month, your daughter can wash and re-wear her period panties. Some brands, like Proof Teen, take it a step further, and even their packaging is made from plants and decomposable! - You don’t have to worry about running out.
Get a few pairs, keep them clean, and you won’t step foot in the sanitary napkin aisle again. (Or, you’ll go a lot less often because you’ll just be buying pads as a backup.) - There are period panties available at different price points, sizes, and materials.
Whatever your daughter needs, you’ll be able to find a pair of period panties that are a good fit for her situation.

@Cec, I would be very surprised if she is developed enough to begin her period. I wouldn't worry about it for a few years.
