There are as many as 4000 homeless people in Philadelphia at any time. Many of those without housing are children. This month, I took part in the Champions for Kids Simple Service project sponsored by Energizer to do my part in making life just a little better for these children living in transition.
I used to work with an organization called Buildabridge that uses art therapy as a way to transform and heal children living in tough situations. Buildabridge holds a very special place in my heart for the truly life changing work that they do. They give the children something that they can take with them wherever they may go…hope. It was a joy to be able to support the work that they do by creating “Be A Light” kits with Ayva for refugee children that Buildabridge serves.
Ayva and I went to Walmart and purchased items to put in the kit. Because Buildabridge heals through the arts, I wanted to get things that would complement their work. We picked up notebooks, pencils, crayons, erasers, and flashlights to encourage the children to “write their light”. After we put the kits together, we added a poem, and took the kits to the Buildabridge offices. Ayva was so excited to leave the kits for “the little boys and girls”, as she kept saying!
There is always an opportunity to give. If you aren’t sure where to start, you can check out Champions for Kids for some ideas! It feels so awesome to be a light to others, so give yourself an opportunity to shine, shine, shine!
