Banana Split Milkshake and Homemade Whipped Cream

Hamilton Beach

My grandmother’s stand mixer used to sit on the counter in the kitchen and she used it at least once every week. Pound cake was her specialty, and folks would stop by the house just about every day for a piece. That cake had tons of sugar in it, real butter, and a hint of vanilla. It was the best cake ever, and one of the strongest memories of my late grandmother that I have. I’ve made the cake a few times with my grandmom’s recipe, killing my arms mixing the ingredients by hand. Now, thanks to Hamilton Beach, I have my very own stand mixer to make culinary memories with my own daughter.  I couldn’t wait to get started, so Ayva and I set up our mixer today to test it out with an easy recipe. We made homemade whipped cream to top banana split milkshakes, and fell in love with our stand mixer in the process.

Hamilton Beach Stand Mixer

Fairly lightweight for a stand mixer, and quite affordable at well  under $200, the Hamilton Beach 6 Speed Stand Mixer has the same mixing action as KitchenAid® stand mixers. I’m looking forward to making so many things like bread, pie crust, and yes, my grandmom’s pound cake. Our Hamilton Beach mixer came with flat beater, whisk and dough hook so I’ll have no problem with any of that! Today, we used the whisk to (accidentally) make butter and then (on purpose) whipped cream.

Terrence, Ayva and I wanted milkshakes, so we blended 3 cups of ice cream with 1.5 cups of fat free milk and 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract. We decided to go to the next level by making it a banana split milkshake. We cut slices of banana and topped the milkshake with them (it would have been good blended in, too, but Ayva didn’t want that). We added chocolate syrup and sprinkles, but the real prize was the homemade whipped cream made in our Hamilton Beach 6 Speed Stand Mixer.

The whipped cream was super easy to make. All we did was pour 1/2 cup of heavy whipping cream into the mixing bowl. We mixed it on medium for 7 minutes…the second time. The first time, we let it mix just a minute or two too long, and it turned into butter! Well, on the bright side, at least now we know how to make butter! The whipped cream came out great on the second try, and it was delicious on top of our Banana Split Milkshake.

LOL at accidentally making butter. Nothing wrong with that tho. The best creations started out as mistakes. 🙂

That milkshake looks YUMMY! I’d definitely use this mixer all the time, as would my mother. She bakes something new at least once and week, so this would come in handy. I love the “patient” look on Avya’s face! LOL!

I am into making shakes myself …with a little protein powder mixed in for meal replacements … I have a stand mixer on my list for years now … but the Kitchen Aid one is so expensive. I am happy to hear that the Hamilton Beach one is under 200. Its a great appliance to win since I’ll be moving in with my husband (now future husband) in November! I’m not much of a baker because its an exact science and I don’t do well with measuring or following recipes BUT with the right tools… I can conquer the world … the baking world that is! Good luck to me!
