Before I got married, I had all sorts of ideas of what it took to be a good wife. I was all, “When I’m a wife, I will never do that”, and “When I’m a wife, you’ll never catch me doing this.” I was so wrong, y’all. Marriage is about so much more than making definitive statements about what you will and won’t do or put up with. It’s a real commitment, a covenant, and it can’t be undone just because some made up rule about what marriage is “supposed to be” is broken.
I learned that pretty quickly once I became engaged to my husband. Right away, along with the well-wishes, women started sharing their wedded wisdom with me. All of the advice that I received from wives, women who had been married for years, a few newlyweds, and even some women whose marriages didn’t work out, let me know just how wrong I was in many of my beliefs about marriage. Along with their advice came specific Bible scriptures to read, and with those scriptures went my excuse for doing marriage my way. There’s already a blueprint for marriage that was created long before I became a wife.
What are some of the things that are included in that blueprint? Well, forgiveness, for one. Then there’s flexibility, support, communication, and most importantly, prayer. Learning to pray for my husband, and for my marriage, was one of the most challenging things for me to do. I didn’t know where to start. I thought my prayers had to be eloquent and sound like poetry. I thought they needed to be thick with emotion, and I had to have the right rhythm and cadence. I thought my prayers had to be complicated and thoughtful and long and sophisticated.
I was wrong.
What I discovered about praying for my marriage is that I just needed to do it, and I needed to do it often. All it takes is a simple, “Father, protect him”, or “Father, help me to be more patient” to make a change. In the movie “War Room“, wife Elizabeth Jordan learns the power of prayer in marriage, just like me. The film opened this summer in theaters, and will be available on digital December 8th and on Blu-ray and DVD December 22nd. It’s a powerful film for Christian couples, and one that shows the overwhelming power of prayer.

I heard about the movie when it came out. A few friends chartered a limo and made it a girls night out. Sadly I was out of town and couldn’t go with them but can’t wait to see it on DVD. My parents taught me that a family that prays together stayed together. Every morning, I have a daily devotion that I say for my husband.
